Juxtapositioning

 Opposites attract?

At present I’m reading a book written by Dr Eric Berne – “Games People Play”. In this book he suggests some things that I thought really interesting so I decided to jot some of the suggestions here to see if I understand at all.

Ok, here goes…

Apparently we play games – I think it’s to avoid intimacy for some reason. I don’t understand why, so for now I’m just putting it down to… ‘because’. Sounds fair enough to me… not overly concerned as to how that sounds to you, so…

…these games are created to avoid intimacy – a thing I happen to like.
Intimacy…
1. the state of being intimate
2. a close, familiar, and usually affectionate or loving personal relationship with another person or group
3. a close association with or detailed knowledge of deep understanding of a place, subject, period or history, etc.: an intimacy with Japan.
4. an act or expression serving as a token of familiarity, affection, or the like: to allow the intimacy of using first names.
5. am amorously familiar act; liberty.
6. sexual intercourse.
7. the quality of being comfortable, warm, or familiar: the intimacy of the room.
8. privacy, esp. as suitable to the telling of a secret: in the intimacy of his studio

Looking at this and some other definitions of the word I now understand why I get into so much trouble. What’s wrong with being intimate? Why would we feel a need to fight being intimate with others?
